Girl's got style
At Kidizen, we believe your personality is writ large in how you dress and that brand new threads aren't usually what set you apart. We came across Haddie and were so smitten with her natural sense of style that we asked if we could feature her as our first Micro Maven. We are thrilled that she & mom accepted! Rockin' the "I would've never thought to put those two prints together" look...Miss Hadleigh Sage and mom, Heather.
What is Haddie like?
Haddie LOVES laughing. She's a silly girl and can put on quite the performance. She will come up with a story or a character and play it with all her heart just like a little actress. She'll create drama and run through all the emotions, fake tears & all. I love it when she pretends to be a boy and drops her voice as low as she possibly can, which isn't very low at all. Never a dull moment.
Her favorite activities are running endlessly at the playground and going to the Philadelphia Zoo. She loves the giraffes and the flamingos (but this seems to change every other time we go). At home, she loves "cooking" with an awesome vintage play kitchen & refrigerator that we recently scored from a flea market & playing with dinosaurs & cars in her water/sand table. She also does quite a bit of "cooking" with her sand as well. ;-) Oh, and dancing! And singing! And more dancing!
She says loving things all the time. Every single day she turns to me and asks, "Mommy, do you know how much I love you?" To which I reply, "Oh yes, babe. Do you know how much I love you?" Always ending with kisses and hugs. She's a very kissy, huggy child and I love every bit of that.
What is Haddie's favorite thing to wear?
There is one specific black leotard with rainbow sequin trim & a multi-colored tutu attached that has been getting a lot of wear lately. She puts that on & performs adorable impromptu shows on an almost daily basis (and generally before bed so as to buy herself more "stay-up time". Sneaky, clever girl).
What do you feel makes Haddie’s style unique?
ONE: We thrift & buy secondhand more often than we buy brand new. I will go on later to list my favorite brands, but we have never been label-centric. I just adore shopping secondhand – it's the not knowing what you'll come across in a thrift store or what will pop up on Kidizen or in Instagram shops that makes it so much more fun than shopping new. I might find some amazing item from Baby Gap that was produced 15 years ago or a European label I've never heard of – it's what keeps our closet fresh & unique!
TWO: We have a HUGE interest in vintage clothing, handmade, and small business labels. Vintage clothing is generally one-of-a-kind. Mixing vintage with current labels is our way of saying, 'We know what's up now but also have a huge appreciation for styles from the past.' Some of our favorite pieces of clothing & hair accessories have been either created by or designed by mothers who had a dream. It's a good feeling to support a Mama doing something that she loves I have found most through Etsy or Instagram.
THREE: We don't take ourselves too seriously. I want Haddie to always be comfortable and to feel free to be herself. I don't argue with her too much if she doesn't want to wear something and I let her help pick out outfits. I will often lay a few options on the floor and let her choose which pieces she prefers to wear. We discuss colors that match and prints that compliment each other. Once dressed, she really enjoys picking the hair accessory & shoes to go with the outfit.
Do you have fave kid brands?
For shoes, our go-to labels are: Minnetonka, Toms, & Saltwater Sandals.
For hair accessories: Mina Loves Bows, Lulu Luvs, and Mini Chuck on Etsy.
When it comes to clothing, we have so many favorites so I'll need to break it down into groups....Thanks to social media (such as Instagram), we have discovered so many amazing small business labels totally worth supporting as they crank out new lines throughout the year: Little Boogaweezin, Hello Apparel, Quinn + Fox, Thief & Bandit, Sweet Luka Mo, Zippity Do Da, Talking Threads, Sadie Then Ty... just to name a few. All worth checking out!
For an occasional splurge, we like Bobo Choses, Mini & Maximus, Misha Lulu, Winter Water Factory, & Mini Rodini.
On a mass produced level, we love H&M! Incredibly affordable & ridiculously cute, often trendy designs. Haddie loves the accessories they create for girls her age: little purses, jewelry, & sunglasses, etc. That sections draws her in every time.
Do you have any style tips for parents with kids her age?
Let them be kids! If they want to wear fairy wings to the grocery store or a crown to the mall, why not? That extra bit of personality is sure to turn heads, render smiles, & win you cool parent points. ;-)
Also, comfort is key! I never put anything on my daughter that she isn't comfortable in. Never ever. Kids can't be themselves in uncomfortable, stuffy clothes. Haddie didn't even start wearing denim until over the age of three.
Any on-the-go looks you’d recommend?
I felt leggings were always the best bet for my little busy body as she grew comfortable with herself and her baby to toddler capabilities. Stretch cotton dresses with bloomers for modesty during play or fun printed leggings, a statement tee, and a cool accessory (embellished hair piece for the girls or some cool shades for the boys) are my quick grabs for running out the door errands or a quick little trip to the playground.
